Why Do Educators Put Music Under the Budget Axe First?

In today’s economy, classrooms are becoming more crowded to save money on teachers’ salaries, ‘recess’ is a thing of the past, and music classes? They are being cut because our elected officials and the government-run school system feels that music and the arts are ‘unnecessary’.

Um, let me see here…learning the arts and music in any form, whether it is singing or playing an instrument, helps a child learn discipline, time management, patience, and gives them a boost in self-esteem in having accomplished something…

Well, we certainly don’t want any of our children being associated with those things!

Ok, enough rant…off the soapbox.

But since our government-run schools are now deciding what our kids should and should not be learning, it falls to the parents to ensure our children get a chance to learn about the arts and music in ways that will help them in future endeavors.

Children are insatiably curious. “Why is the sky blue?” “How come it rains?” “How do apples grow?” “Why is Grandma walking around outside in her housecoat?”

Ok, humor, aside, you get my point. Kids love to ask questions and try to learn about everything and anything as long as it is 1) challenging for them, 2) interesting for them, and 3) it is fun for them to learn!

You can make piano for kids fun as long as they do not see it as a daily ‘chore’. Teaching kids ‘music theory’ is a waste of time. They need to learn…they want to learn what sounds good and how they can put this all together and play a song. And it does not really matter what song as long as your child knows that they have gotten it right and they recognize the song!

I am not advocating that your child practice several hours every day of the week but there are ways to keep your child engaged and wanting to play the piano. There are a wide variety of online lessons and tangible lessons you can buy online and have in hand forever. Make playing music fun and practice is never going to be considered a ‘chore’.

Music makes us laugh, it makes us cry, and it makes us dream. Music for our kids should never be an option. And this doesn’t have to be a problem. Music is a door that all parents can open to encounter an incredible journey…if they know what to look for in music education.
